The Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), an agency under the Department of Science and Technology, recently issued Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) - 013 which verifies the the claim that Biomate® makes plastic bags oxo-biodegradable by incorporating it in the plastic material.
“Polyolefin plastics formulated with Biomate® undergo a two-step degradation process; first by photodegradation and then biodegradation”. Photodegradation is the breakdown of the plastic by uv light and thermal energy from the sun. On the other hand, biodegradation is brought about by the exposure to different substances naturally produced by microorganisms and other living organisms”.
Because it makes plastic bags oxo-biodegradable, Biomate® helps in preventing pollution of waterways which hurts marine life; eliminating clogging of sewages that cause flood; and preventing choking of landfills.
Biomate® is non-toxic and free from heavy metals like cobalt thus making it suitable for use in plastics for food contact applications.
